Laredo  has 42 gun dealers in the city, out of more than 5,800 licensed dealers in the state. From November 2006 to June 2008, ten weapons sold by Academy Sports in Laredo, most of them assault weapons, appeared in crime scenes in Mexico, including a murder and an attempted murder just over the border in Nuevo Laredo. Jacaman Guns and Ammo sold a Romanian WASR assault weapon that turned up in the hands of Zetas less than two months later.
