El Paso has 85 gun dealers in the city, out of more than 5,800 licensed dealers in the state.
In September 2007, John Avelar entered Cold War Shooters in El Paso and purchased six assault weapons. Four of these weapons were reportedly used in homicides, and recovered in Chihuahua City. Over the next few months, Avelar walked into Collector’s Gun Exchange, located a few blocks away on North Mesa, and bought seven more assault weapons. Two of them were reportedly used in homicides, and were recovered in Ciudad Juarez and Samalayuca, Chihuahua. Six weapons sold from Kirks Gun Shop and four from El Paso Gun Exchange also turned up at crime scenes in Mexico. All these gun dealers continue to do business.
The El Paso City Council and County are considering resolutions that will declare the city’s and county’s support for the gun dealers’ Code of Conduct to prevent straw purchases and gun trafficking.
