Albuquerque has 138 licensed gun dealers, out of 708 in the state. From 2007 to 2010, Ron Peterson Firearms on Central Avenue sold at least four weapons that were later recovered in Mexico – two of them less than two months after being purchased in Albuquerque.
Gun shows are the source of many weapons smuggled into Mexico and used in violence there. On August 18 and 19, as the Caravan pulls out of town, a gun show will be held in Albuquerque at Expo New Mexico. The show organizers helpfully state that “There is currently no state or federal law saying you must be a dealer to sell your personal guns.” They mention legal requirements that buyers be New Mexico residents 18 years or older, but don’t suggest that felons, those with mental illness or violent ideas should be excluded from purchases.
