Las Cruces has 47 licensed gun dealers, out of 708 in the state. In 2007, Erika Garcia bought two Glock pistols, an Armalite AR–‐50 rifle, and two AK47–‐type rifles at Sportsman Warehouse and Custom Cartridge in Las Cruces. They were recovered in Mexico – the AR–‐ 15 was seized in Durango from members of the Zetas.
Las Cruces Mayor Kenneth Miyagishima is a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, whichsupports establishing the gun dealer Code of Conduct to prevent straw purchases of guns.
Las Cruces has the largest number of gun dealers per capita of the southwest cities the Caravan is visiting.
